Sneak Peek: Aqua, Tangerine, and Wood Styled Shoot

Spring nudged its way through the air yesterday. A brightly lit sun cast down its heat waves, the sky danced in ocean colors above me, and for the first time in weeks, the winds only sighed. And it was...awesome.

I had the pleasure of shooting a styled shoot yesterday that nearly did me in. The colors, the environment, and the people I worked with were all sublimely perfect. Two months ago, Natosha Cooke and I started a small idea board on Pinterest filled with aqua accents, bursts of tangerine color, and wooden elements for a more vintage feel. And after gathering a plethora of amazing professionals who revel in their work, yesterday it came to life. I have so many people to thank for making this shoot a reality. It was so. much. fun.

To those of you involved, I am so inspired by you all! You have made this so much fun for me! And as a new mom, I can even say you made it easy. Hugs and love to all of you!!

So having a baby means life is busy. Ha! Like I thought that was even possible...to get MORE busy. Anyway, so I'm not a complete loser in missing an entire month of posting, here's a last-day-of-January-post-picture.

Personal: A Birth Story

Some people write because it comes easy. Some people write because it's a hobby. Some write out of obligation. But then again some people write because they don't want to forget. I'm that person. Most anything I've ever written was only written because I'm afraid I won't remember the details of the story. And all stories, both good and bad, are important. At least I think they are.

October 10th was a life changer for me. I never thought I'd be THAT girl: the one who talks about her baby all the time, or the one who honestly wants to share her birth story with the lady in the grocery store. I had an eye appointment yesterday and the Dr. was asking me about my little boy. We got to talking and suddenly we were sharing every last detail about our experiences with birth! I just had no idea that there's this sort of secret club mother's all belong to where it just doesn't get old to talk about the craziness that you went though to deliver a child! But I digress...and though this is very personal and may not be for the faint of heart, I should start at the beginning.

Three years ago, my husband and I decided to set a date to have a child. We'd always known we were going to try and have children, but we were both admittedly selfish and too busy to share our lives with someone else. We were thrilled just to be with each other. However, we both thought it wise to at least just set a date. We choose early winter of 2011 because winter is our slower season and we're both winter babies; it was three years away, so it gave us some time to travel; and because, well, this Vietnamese woman who's been doing my nails for the last 9 years said that 2011 was a great year to have a child. Ha! I totally believed her. So it was set--but with a pre-pregnancy agreement: Should we freak out in 2011 about it, we would set another date, so no pressure! Okay, Done! And three years went by in a whirl as we simply just lived our lives. We did more things than I think are even possible to fit into three years! We opened up a Christmas tree lot, built a huge barn on our business property in Boulder, started a small wedding photography business, designed a few cars, and traveled the world! That last part is real...I mean after Australia, Fiji, New Zealand, and 9 countries in Europe, that has to qualify for at least a little world travel! =)

And 2011 crept up quickly. But we were ready. At least to try. However, I have to be honest in saying that I had no idea our plan would actually work. The. First. Time. No idea. But it did and suddenly we were in this whirlwind of a new life. Deep in my gut I'd known I was pregnant after only a few weeks, however when we went to my OB, she told me it was nearly impossible for me to have known because what she could see on her small machine scan was only a small pin-dot. I was sent to another part of the hospital to have an expensive, more "high tech" ultrasound to confirm it. After waiting a few hours, and sitting through, sadly, a mean sonographer reading, we were told that while it looked like I was pregnant, it was still too early to be sure so it would be best if I had some blood drawn to check my hormonal levels, and then return in a week to do it all over again. My OB had told me that if my levels went up, then I probably would have a baby, but if they hadn't, then most likely it wasn't a successful attempt. She also dealt me a blow that day: Oh, and Shannon? It looks like you have a bicornuate uterus. Were you aware of this? Wait, what? My mind started wandering. Did I know this? I had no idea why I was being asked or how it mattered. But apparently it was a big deal--A uterine anomaly that's cause isn't explainable. In layman's terms, it means that my uterus is heart shaped and small, rather than vase-shaped and roomy. There were tons of implications with this and it would mean I'd be high risk, IF I really was pregnant. It also meant, I realized later, that I'd spend a few nights up late on the computer doing research on my newly found condition...sobbing over every story and scary event I might have to endure. I remember thinking, hmm, I didn't picture it going this way. Where are the balloons, parties, and loud screams of joy?! There was nothing left for me to do than ride it out and see what happened. Jason and I decided at that point to wait as long as possible before telling anyone. It didn't seem as exciting knowing what could be at stake and what's the sense in worrying everyone else too?

A week later, I'd returned for blood-work. My levels had more than doubled and my OB was shocked at how "normal" things actually looked. She'd also told me that my tiny pin-dot had grown as large as a grain of rice! One teeny piece of rice! Wow. So small! I was also a staggering 6 weeks pregnant...which mathematically didn't add up for me since that was literally impossible...but that's a whole other blog post. Because, really, the dating for pregnancies is just rubbish. And it's more confusing than an algorithm...which I don't understand and, furthermore, had to look up to spell. Nice. Either way, I was pregnant, but so not out of the woods.

Our weeks went by eventful--full of Dr's appointments and more ultrasounds than should really be necessary. Yet, I'd never been pregnant before, so physically "seeing" this baby grow before my eyes was spectacular and I remember feeling a bit dependent on the ultrasounds. When I reached my second trimester, the ultrasounds stopped as I was progressing uniquely "normal" for my condition. It was hard to go for weeks without a peak in my belly. And I had a hard time sleeping because I wasn't sure my baby was getting bigger. It's so hard going day to day through your routines and not truly know what's going on in there. I have learned to be excessively appreciative for modern technology.

As my second trimester was well underway, I found myself on a bit of a high! I didn't have the normal preggo cravings that so many women talk about, but I did experience total pregnancy heaven in a way. I was happy, still very active, well-rested, and glowing. And I started to believe this baby would make it, albeit a small, early delivery only a month or so away. Boy, oh boy, was I wrong!

My third trimester seem to come all too quickly. July brought the heat and I anticipated any moment my belly would give me. There was one night, and thankfully only one night, which scared me more than I'd like to admit. It was two days before I was to fly to California for my best friend's wedding and I'd woken up with a horrible pain in my abdomen. I'd never felt anything like it and when it didn't got away after a few hours, I sought my Dr's. advice. I was tested for pre-term labor, but was told later that day it was a false alarm. However, the pain I'd experienced lasted 24 hours and I remember just writhing in it. I couldn't sleep, lay down, or eat that day. And I'd spent hours sitting on the couch rocking back and forth throughout the night. I remember giving myself a deadline. If, I thought, by 9am when we're supposed to be leaving for the airport and the pain is still this bad, I'll check myself into the hospital for pain meds. Because honestly, I can't continue like this. The charlie-horse on my left side was entirely debilitating! I prayed hard that night. I prayed until I couldn't think of what I'd say. And by divine intervention, because, honestly, there is nothing else it could be, the pain stopped. Exactly at 8:15am the pain stopped. I felt relief so strongly I thought possibly I'd blocked it out. But, no, it was gone. And it never resurfaced. What it was I'll never know, but I was extremely happy it passed. By 9am we were on our way to Cali to attend Kimmy's wedding! As my belly had grown to what I felt was an abnormally large hot air balloon, I found my balance wasn't quite as it was before on 4" heels! Regardless, I was able to make it through her wedding with flying colors, granted some newly discovered cankles I wasn't too thrilled with!

Shortly after we returned from Cali, I hired a doula, after a good-friend of mine raved about hers. I wasn't entirely sure what a doula was, but after hearing the term "birth assistant" I was on board. I interviewed only one and Bonnie was it. I clicked with her immediately and she quickly became an increasingly important part of my pregnancy. She gave Jason and I private birthing classes a few weeks before so we'd have an idea what to expect. The most vivid class was the one in which she tried to prepare me for the pains of labor. She explained how contractions were just really intense pains that would come and go. She said the longest ones are usually one minute long and then there would be a break for a few minutes. She had Jason bring a bowl of ice into our living-room as we sat on the floor. We were instructed to pick up a handful of ice and squeeze it for one full minute. Without further instruction we did so...and I suddenly thought I'd be crazy to try natural child-birth! It'd only been about 18 seconds and my hand was burning. I was extremely uncomfortable and kept saying how awful it was. I couldn't believe how much it annoyed me and after a minute, I was reluctant to want to pick it up and try again. But we did, and I remember praying that on the day my baby would come, I'd be able to deal better with labor than I had with a few measly pieces of ice. Right. Regardless, hiring Bonnie was the single greatest decision I've made in a long time.

If you're still reading this, you deserve a gold star. Plain and simple. It took me awhile to get the background of the story together from memory and a few thousand words later, here I am. My birth story:

"For this child I prayed; and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him." 1 Samuel 1:27. I spent much of my pregnancy praying. Praying mostly that my will would be the will of God. I wanted this baby, but as I'd been told from day one that my chances for miscarriage, still-birth, and pre-term labor was so much higher than normal, I'd come to expect that one of them was bound to happen. O ye of little faith. I'd convinced myself that pre-term labor was the most likely. But, week 37 was easy. Then week 38 came and went. By week 39, I was sure the baby was going to come any minute, but as I approached the middle of week 40, I was SURE something was wrong. My mind tried to rationalize each and every thing that had happened. I tried to be okay with the fact that possibly I had been totally "normal" the entire time and that this baby was just going 100% by the books of his growth. I tried to be okay with this possibly being God's plan... Yet I woke up on the morning of October 10, 4 days past my due date, in tears. Suddenly I'd felt more out of control that ever before and I'd honestly felt something was terribly wrong. I'd been going to work everyday since I'd found out, but Jason encouraged me to call the Dr. (and Bonnie) just to ease my mind. After a quick chat with both, I was told to go in for an exam. My Dr. eased my mind about the dates of the baby's gestation, but informed me that if by the end of the week, the baby had not come, I was to be induced. Induction wasn't something I was looking forward too. In fact, I wanted to avoid it at all costs as long as the baby was healthy. Before I left, she checked me to see if I'd made any progress. I closed my eyes as she checked for dilation before I left. I laughed in disbelief when she said I was already 5 centimeters! The wave of relief I felt was unparalleled. I left the hospital for work shortly after, but didn't last there long. I'd been able to complete only one sale before I'd felt a small, blunt pain. It felt like a tight cramp, but it was still manageable. I wasn't comfortable sitting, so I stood and rocked from side to side, unnaturally, but involuntarily. Looking back, I was clearly having contractions, but for whatever reason, I didn't think that's what they were. After seeing so many movies of women breathing like animals and leaning over tables screaming out loud, I just assumed this was part of the third trimester. Foolish me.

I decided that since the cramping wasn't subsiding, I'd just head home to check out for the day. Jason jokingly asked what my plan was if I had contractions on the way home in the car, but I told him, well, then I guess I'll call you and pull-over...but trust me, it's a long way off. That afternoon, I'd spent an hour or so on the couch with the dogs when my youngest brother called. He came over to keep me company and brought me Mad Greens and an Coke Icee. In hindsight, this was the perfect start to the most awesome birth experience ever! I had the best "last supper" I could have wished for, and the cramps (that were really contractions) hardly felt like anything as Alan and I laughed on the couch watching Ellen.

On his way out, Alan told me to let him know if something "happened." We said our goodbyes and then I put in a load of laundry. I decided to lie down on the floor for a minute and sink into the cramping I was feeling. I prayed again, wondering if today really would be the day...even after all my tears earlier. Still, I was sure the pains I felt weren't contractions, but if they were, I told myself, then I got this in the bag! My father showed up at my door a few minutes later. He needed to drop something off before heading home and wanted to check on me since I'd left work earlier. I told him I was fine, just tired. We chatted for only a minute. He told me to hang in there and commented on the nice weather. As he headed for his car, my water broke. I remember hesitating...wondering if I should even tell him. It wasn't likely he'd notice anyway since I was wearing long pants, and I didn't want him to worry, but suddenly I couldn't contain my own thoughts. I blurted out, Dad! I think my water just broke. He came running at me arms wide open and screaming. I could see tears in his eyes already. In the mixture of his excitement all I could do was stand there in shock. I wasn't panicked about the next move because Bonnie, and the Dr.s' had told me that most first babies take anywhere from 10 to 15 hours of labor. I was simply shocked that my baby was on his way! He rushed home to shower from work on my insistence that I was fine, but only after he took a picture of us together...just so he had one. I said I'd call him if anything else happened. Then I stood there alone, with tears streaming down my face, and laughed.

I decided to call Jason. It was just after 6:30 and I assumed he was headed home.

(Ring. Ring. Click.)

Me: Hey, love!

J: Hi!

Me: Guess what?

J: What?

Me: Well, I think my water just broke.

J: It did?! So, what does that mean?

Me: I'm not sure. I guess I won't have to be induced!

J: So do we need to go to the hospital, are you having contractions?

Me: Not really. Just cramps...but Bonnie said it takes a long time, so I'd say we just wait.

J: Ok yea. Well I was actually headed to Home Depot. Do you think I should rush home?

Me: No. I'll call you if something else happens. I'm just going to call the Dr. to let them know.

J: Ok babe. Love you so much!

Me: Love you!

(Click.)

I laugh when I read it now. But this is our life.

I decided to sit in the bathroom...to be on the safe side. I called the on-call Dr. next. She told me I was probably not going into labor and that possible my water hadn't truly broke. Uh... Sometimes, she said, you just think it did. After seeing approximately 2 liters leave my body in only a few minutes, I was pretty sure that's what it was, but I decided it was best not to argue. Either way, she said, call me when you're contractions start and make sure to come to the hospital when they're 5 minutes apart. Right. 5 minutes. Will do. My phone started beeping, dinging, and clicking. I suddenly realized that the news of my water breaking was spreading through my family circle like wildfire. I decided to check only one text. My friend Tess had written: "I'm thinking about you. It's a full moon and I think you'll have your baby tonight along with a bunch of other women. ;) Love you." I laughed to myself since her text came only minutes before my water broke. I really hoped she was right.

I was still in the bathroom when Jason came home. He laughed when he saw me and asked if he should shower from work just in case we had to leave. Something strangely cosmic happened to me when I saw him. It was as if suddenly I knew internally it was okay to have this baby because right then, I had my first true contraction. Jason rushed over, is this a contraction? Amateurishly I laughed, yea, I think so. Jason ran to the other room to grab his phone. He said he'd start a timer so we could see if they were. His iPhone hadn't even loaded the stopwatch-mode before I had another one. Jason and I looked at each other. Eyes wide open. It couldn't have been even 2 minutes since the first one I'd had...so what was this? He started the timer. I stood up to change positions and had another one. I will never forget what Jason said next: Shannon...that wasn't even 2 minutes! What's wrong with this phone?! We both started laughing, but it was concluded we weren't timing them right. I had Jason call Bonnie. Although she was skeptical, she said she'd be right over if we thought the contractions were that close. I decided to pack for the hospital, but they kept coming. By what I think was number 6, they seemed pretty intense. All the planning we'd done for laboring at home was quickly becoming useless. Jason brought me a big ball to sit on, but I wasn't recovering long enough to even change positions. I heard a tinge of panic in his voice when he asked what he should be doing. All I remember thinking was, this isn't how we'd planned it, and I want my mommy! I suddenly thought the hospital would be the safest place. Jason ran to get our pups put away and I heard him calling Bonnie to turn around and just head for Boulder Community. Yea, he said. They're real and I don't know how, but they're fast.

Minutes later, I was in the car. Jason was running back and forth as fast as he could, while I clutched the door-handle in a death-grip. I'd had 3 contractions on the way out of the house. I tried hard to clear my mind and think of nothing else but breathing. I said more prayers. This time, they were selfish, and I prayed for peace. October nights are black, and our car-ride to the hospital was done in almost total darkness. Jason told me to squeeze his hand when it hurt. I had to laugh later, because he'd screamed himself when I did. I suppose laboring women have the strength of ten men and I didn't know I'd almost broke his hand.

Although our hospital trip only took ten minutes, it was just about the longest 10 minutes of my life. Pulling up to to the hospital is a vision entirely blurry in my memory and I was seeing everything in front of me as if I was floating above myself. I could see the fuzzy red lights glowing from the EMERGENCY entrance sign and I felt relief on seeing my mom and Bonnie waiting anxiously for me at the door. The ran to the car to help me out just as soon as the car stopped. My mom's first words were: Oh Bonnie! This is real. You can see it in her face. Getting out of the car was a feat and I thought the contractions would never stop. Barely through the front door, I remember dropping to my knees during another contraction. I was still vaguely aware that people were probably watching and although I was fetal, I tried not to make a scene. I took a few steps towards the elevator, but bent over with another one. A young couple, clearly expecting their baby in a month or so, was sitting on a couch only a few feet from me. I assumed they were doing their hospital tour and I remember seeing their faces go white as I held my breath in pain. I tried hard to make it look easier than it was...try to be graceful, I teased myself...and I've since wondered if I'd made their anticipation of baby a tad too real. As soon as the contraction ended, Bonnie told me that there wasn't time to walk up to Labor and Delivery and that I needed to get into a wheelchair so she could push me there. Sitting down was just about the last thing I'd wanted to do, so I knelt backwards instead and she pushed me quickly through the hospital hallways and into the elevator. It was quiet for a minute or so, and I think we all just listened to our breath in that moment. When the elevator doors opened, Bonnie pushed me passed the check-in nurses. There just wasn't time. I felt relief that I'd made it and I knew my family was waiting nearby with bated breath. I was taken directly to an open room and I crawled onto the hospital bed like a child. Hi Shannon, someone said. My name is Allison, I'm going to be your labor and delivery nurse. I'm going to hook you up to a fetal monitor... but that was really all I'd heard. My contractions were every two to three minutes and my body was entering a transitional phase. Apparently, this stage of labor occurs right before your body involuntarily pushes. I felt like vomiting and it was in that moment that I thought I might die. I'm deathly afraid of throwing up and this part of the labor was by far the worst. I curled up in a ball with tears. Jason held my hand and my mom tried to rub my back, while Allison held a bucket and Bonnie fed me ice-chips. Strangely, I remember thinking, Try, Shannon. Try hard to enjoy this. It won't last forever. A few long minutes passed. Allison told me she'd have to get an IV in me for fluids as a precautionary, but we all knew I was passed the point of medicated pain management...even if I'd wanted to use it. I hung my arm over the bed and clutched a pillow to my chest as she shoved a needle in my wrist. My contractions were getting longer and more intense and I wasn't even sure how that was possible.

After what seemed like every possible laboring position, my body involuntarily started pushing. It was the most intensely crazy feeling I've ever had, and it frightened me. I looked at Jason and told him I couldn't do this. Then I told my mom I couldn't, then Bonnie, then Allison, then God... Everyone in the room kept reassuring me that not only could I do it, I was doing it. My body pushed again and I wanted to sink into a hole. I tried resisting the pain and arched my back to defy it. With every push, I fought hard to contain it. This is so true to who I am. I usually oppose change and try to control everything. The other-worldly part of the brain your body enters during natural childbirth is the most fascinating place. But leave it to me to try and escape it. It was Bonnie who realized what I was doing. She quickly put me in a new position. My legs were now propped up on a pushing-bar. My mother was to support one leg, and Alison the other. Bonnie wrapped a sheet around the bar and then around both of my wrists and told me to hold on. As Jason knelt down beside my bed, she told me to focus on her hand in front of me. She told me to be as quiet as I possibly could. Then she told me to commit to the pushing. Push back, Shannon. I want you to take a deep breath when I tell you, and push for as long as you can. When you can fully commit and be inside the pain, the pain will be over and you can hold your baby. I whimpered a small cry and though I tried not to say it again, I told her I couldn't. But it wasn't the truth. I couldn't get my words and my mind to line up. I focused as hard as possible and held my breath. Bear down, she said. Good mama. You're doing it! I can see your baby.

My mother fought back tears with every push I made; she could see him too. Jason stayed close to my face and kissed me on the forehead. Once I'd committed to pushing, the pain reached it's max. No longer did I feel like it controlled me. It wasn't getting any more intense and I started feeling as though I'd regained control. I took a deep breath. Pushed as hard as I could, then relaxed during the small breaks. Repeat, repeat, repeat. I remember it being the easiest part of the entire birth. I had relaxed enough somehow to slow things down and after each major push, I laid quietly until the next one. Jason told me later that it looked as though I was sleeping in-between each contraction. Who'd have thought? ...because only an hour earlier, I'd felt as though a volcano had erupted inside me.

I pushed every few minutes for over an hour. My body was jello. I felt weak, exhausted, and useless. I was ready to be done, but secretly prayed for a longer break between contractions. Bonnie fed me ice-chips and fanned my face with a cold washcloth. I reached for Jason and mumbled again that I wasn't sure I could keep going. I wanted to smile at him, tell him I loved him, but my mouth wouldn't cooperate. He whispered: I know you can do it Shannon. God will help you, I just said a prayer. A tear ran down my cheek, but I held my breath once more. I heard my mom start to cry and the Dr. say, Okay, mama. There's the head! I pushed again. It was like an angel choir rang out as a little baby boy was scooped up and laid on my chest! Jason burrowed his face in mine and we cried, while my mother said over and over again how absolutely beautiful he was. I have never felt such joy or sweet relief as I did in that moment. The realization that all the pain was over, that I had done it entirely on my own, and that a tiny baby was crying out to me was exhilarating. And I have never known such love.

In a perfect world, my story would have ended here, but only a few minutes passed before I was informed that I would be taken into surgery. Although this wasn't what I'd wanted to hear and I longed to bond and snuggle with my new family, I knew I didn't have a choice. After the equivalent of herculean pushing, I'd endured a 4th degree tear. It required an hour long surgery and over 100 stitches. A spinal was necessary and my recovery would take far longer than most. But nothing, not even that, could take me off the high I'd just experienced. I had the greatest birth experience I could have imagined for myself and was surrounded by love more than I knew possible. My mother had always said she'd have baby after baby if all she had to do was give birth and skip everything else. It wasn't until I'd done it myself that I realized how she could feel that way. It's nothing you can explain, but I fully believe it's one of life's greatest highlights.

Our little boy, Elijah Armani, is the joy of our life and our biggest accomplishment together. I have no idea where the time has gone and I marvel at how much he learns on a daily basis and how I can love someone I've just met so passionately. The body is an amazing creation and I have healed well. And God is good, because the pains of labor aren't anything I can remember anymore. Of what I do remember, it was a day of joy and fun beyond measure. I am highly blessed. And strong. But I still can't squeeze an ice-cube worth a darn.

It's Christmas Morning!!

...In the early morning hours, I'm sitting quiet. Things will be busy and loud throughout our home in only a few short hours...Eli's first Christmas is a big deal around here! It's always a big deal when there's a little baby at Christmas...

Here's to hoping you all have a wonderful Christmas and can really celebrate the baby who makes all this possible!! Happy Birthday Jesus! (Luke 2:11)

Personal: ...be my "lasts"

Time is fleeting. I can't believe how it's already been another year. But it has been. And it's been wonderful with you!!

I always tried to imagine our lives together. A cozy house, a few dogs. One, maybe two kids. But I never thought it would be this awesome! You have made me the happiest girl, J. And you've given me a beautiful baby this year. I always knew you loved me, but seeing you love on this boy melts my heart. He is a perfect replica of his amazing father!!

Brown Palace & DU Wedding: Michael + Jen

She was as calm as a snowy winter's eve. Quite a juxtaposition from the weather outside: bright blue skies and screaming fall color. I can't remember a time I saw a bride so calm. So truly ready to get married! While I shot pictures, Jen casually slipped in to her dress, aided by only her mother and sister-in-law, Katie. And since Katie and I have been friends for years, it was hard to believe I was shooting a wedding: No job has been so easy...so fun.

We followed a small timeline of shots Jen had wanted in the Brown Palace before her small chapel ceremony at Denver University. Fortunately, we were able to take full advantage of the gorgeous sliver of Colorado weather in mid-November.

Opting for a first look was an advantage because of ambient light, but it melted my heart. Never have I see such pure love coming from an anticipating groom. As Jen took the long walk to the tiny chapel, her honorable fiance, Staff Sergeant, Michael, wore his heart on his sleeve. A day shy of Veteran's day, an oak tree rustled its red leaves quietly nearby as they shared their moment. And for a minute, I couldn't believe I was a part of it.

Jen and Michael, I hope you've enjoyed your first few weeks as a married couple! Thank you for allowing me to document your journey, your day, and your love. I wish you nothing short of happiness, longevity, and light! Hugs, Shannon

Jen and Michael's wedding was held at The Brown Palace in Denver, CO. Although photographing the dimly-lit interior is a challenge, the architecture is breathtaking.

While even I could hardly see Jen approaching...

...there was not doubt Michael could see her!

Having a new baby has brought me so much joy and totally changed my life...but after shooting a wedding on Saturday, I've realized everything I've pursued in life has brought me joy and I am more than thrilled to just live it!!

Baby Shower: My Vintage Schoolhouse Party

I have to say that life with Baby has been relatively easy...when compared to life with Baby and my first babies, The Dogs. =( I've had a harder time adjusting the pups to the change of pace with my little one than I ever thought possible. But, with time, and PRAYER!, I hope this will pass and we can get on with a more normal, well, better, life than we had before! I love my pups SO MUCH, but this little guy has completely stolen my heart!

Today, I was honored to have been published on an amazing blog: OnToBaby! My sister-in-law had graciously thrown me a baby shower, and to my amazement, she made it better that I could have imagined. It was a picture-perfect scene with so much eye-candy, I was in heaven! Here's some of the images I took of this beautiful baby shower...and yes, my amazing husband, was behind the camera when I was in front. =)

Personal: My NEW Baby!

I'M A NEW MOMMY!!

Life has been turned upside down for me...or right side up...however you want to look at it! I was blessed with a beautiful baby boy on Monday, October 10th, at 9:49pm. I have the most incredible birth story and experienced such an emotional first week, but haven't had the time, nor energy to share. I can't wait, however, to document his life!! Eek!! So much has happened already and I can't believe how fast time is suddenly moving!

Thanks for the well wishes, and patience while my husband and I enjoy every waking (ha! and sleeping) minute with this angel.

And because he's so beautiful, here's a picture. Meet Elijah Armani.

Personal: Patience is a Virtue

Today is October 7th!

It's my DUE date. And so far, I'm not due...or even feel like I will be. I am shocked that I'm even writing about it because it wasn't until this week that I've understood all the other mama's out there who talk about their babies 24/7. Patience is SUCH a Virtue--and I feel badly for being so impatient. For SO many women, 40 weeks is simply what pregnancy is...and for many more, it's 40+ weeks. I just never thought I'd be so "lucky"...to have a baby healthily grow in my belly for SO long and my heart goes out to all the mommies who don't make it so far!

The Dr's told me a full-term baby was nearly impossible, most likely not going to work, or to end up scary in the middle. I still can't say I'm in-the-clear because, well, I'm still waiting to hold a healthy little baby. BUT, I have beaten the odds, and shattered all the predictions of the 6 Dr's who've cared for me. Success!!

I can't wait to see his little face and show him the letter I'd written so early on when I was frightened for his well-being. And then kiss his chubby cheeks!

Personal: The Baby Bump!

I have missed the days in which I modeled. Not to sound like I was anywhere near famous, or even pursuing it full-time, but there were many days that I was fortunate enough to model and I miss it. And the size at which I was seems like only a distant memory now. I can still hardly believe I'm pregnant! =)

...But...I have modeled this growing belly quite a bit. Perhaps as a tribute to this little boy I carry. Neither my mom nor my husband's mom have many pregnancy pictures and whether or not my baby cares, his daddy thought he'd want them some day. So his daddy took a TON of them. =)

As the end of my pregnancy is rounding a corner, I thought it might be fun to share the pictures Jason's taken of me this last month. (Although no judging my farmer's tan! =) Ha!) We took a drive little while ago at sunset to catch a few pretty rays. Freshly mowed fields, warm weather, blue skies, humming locusts, a round belly, a doting husband, and a pregnancy that turned out to be astonishingly easy, makes me think this day will remain one of my fondest memories.

I can hardly wait to meet him! Oh! and learn his name. =)

Commercial Shoot: Free The Girls!!

In my count-down-to-baby, I've slacked a bit on getting images up...but it's been driving me silly! I love posting the gorgeous faces of those whom I shoot.

Last month, I had the privilege of working with some amazing ladies for a super fantastic organization called Free The Girls! Please check our their cause on faceboook and donate today! It's easy peasy!!

Fashion Shoot: The Sponge & Dominique Kruse

I am not a professional model. Nor a professional modeling coach. Just putting that out there. However...quite often I get inquiries from "wanna-be-models" asking to do a shoot and if I can help teach them about modeling. To be honest, it's some of the most rewarding shoots I've encountered because helping someone gain more knowledge about the ins and outs of what they need to do and who they should work with to model full-time, or even part-time, is so much fun! I teach nothing more than self-reassurance that the true "you" is beautiful and that most of the time the faces that "wanna-be's" make is NOT the face that gets you signed. It takes more than lip puckering to be sexy, and not everyone can nail the open-mouth look. I was fortunate enough to learn this the hard way. The long and winding-road way. But it's given me perspective I don't think I'd have otherwise and an ability to share all that I've learned with anyone willing to listen.

Close to 6 years ago, I wanted to start shooting. Shooting pictures. I thought about it all the time. Dreamt about it, and then tried to talk myself out of it because I was sure it was too late. After all, I was about to graduate college and hadn't even taken one photography course. I was sure that only the best of the best were highly educated and trained and I wasn't sure how I was going to learn how to shoot if I didn't know my f-stops from my focus points. They both have f right...so aren't they the same? Seriously, I had NO clue. My biggest dream at the time was not to be famous or published, but just to be a photographer who shot fashion...or, the daunting task of weddings. But I wanted it. And I wanted it bad. Something else I wanted? To be photographed. I had long volunteered as the main event in all family photos, yet I was sure I wasn't, well, pretty enough? to model. Sure, I'd been told I was pretty, but I can't say that people were telling me I should. Ha! No agents ever approached me and I doubted my ability to ever get a professional photo....until Jason (yep, the husband) encouraged me. (Wait!! So why are all my posts about my husband and how amazing he is?! Geez Louise! Lol.) Well I can't lie, it was him that pushed me to try...

One night while watching TV, I blurted out: I wish I could model. Jason, who gives me no slack ever, just said, so why don't you? I had tons of reasons as to why I couldn't but he told me they were all excuses. Dumb excuses. I have nothing to lose by trying because at least then I'd know if it were possible, he'd said. Humph. I think I went to bed angry that he didn't understand my excuses, er, reasons as to why this would never work, but somewhere in the middle of the night I decided I'd muster up the courage and try it...just so I could prove I was right.

I had no idea where to start, but found a few names of local photographers in my area the next day online. I wrote a letter to one guy about how I'd be willing to help him with a project should he need someone to test lighting or something... An hour went by before I pushed send. To my surprise, he wrote back. Said he had a project he was working on and wanted to know if I modeled. OMG! I had no idea what to say. I can't tell a lie--honestly, I'm horrible at it--so I told him the truth...that it was something I'd always wanted to do, but never had. To my disbelief, he said it didn't matter and gave me detailed instructions on what to bring and where to meet him later that week. Suddenly, I was on Cloud 9. And Cloud 1, which if you don't know is the amateur Cloud, because honestly, I had no IDEA what I'd just gotten myself into. This guy could be a creep. This guy could be a fake. He could be a child molester! Feeling like I had no choice, I did what any normal girl would do in this case: I called my mom. =) I supposed it's an unwritten code for photographers that most don't want MOM coming along to the shoot. But I had know idea who stranger-guy-with-a-camera was, so MOM came with....and I brought a whistle just in case! No joke.

I was fortunate enough to get a ton of modeling trade work during that first year after having a few shots taken. And I somehow landed some paid jobs and was even published! a few times for having never modeled a day in my life. Little did all the photographers willing to shoot with me know that I was not only living a dream, I was creating the reality of another. I'd become a sponge! I listened to each and every word they told me about posing, lighting, and facial expressions. And I asked questions about their cameras and how they started photography and how they got to where they were. Almost all of them became friends and over the years, they taught me the courses I never took in high school--that I'd never been brave enough to take in college. Suddenly, I found myself modeling on a weekly basis and buying my first (of MANY) Digital SLR camera. And I found a new addiction in life that was more fulfilling than anything I'd ever done. I started a profile for my photography page and what was once just flowers and macro shots of dogs and trees, suddenly turned into models. Real models. Fashion models. Professional models! And I was shooting like a banshee every moment I got...relishing in the fact that where I was was further than I'd dreamed. And after being signed as a model last year, meeting Jasmine Star, and posting my wedding website, I felt all those years of self-doubt were a waste. ...I have since learned that I have to dream bigger.

Dominique, you inspire me and when we were shooting, I saw myself in you! I know you've never modeled before, but you're willingness to try whatever I thew at you paid off. You are a gorgeous spirit, but you totally caught on and rocked your face off. I am so happy that for a few hours, you were willing to be my sponge. Chase that acting and modeling career, girl. You're going to be a star!

Baby Shoot: Baby Cook"i"e is 8 months old!

I've got baby on the brain! I'm less than 1 week away from being 9mos pregnant and think this is getting super real. =) I have no idea what to expect, but hope I'm half as good at this mommy thing as Natosha Cooke.

Lifestyle Shoot: Whitney Schey

My husband, Jason, and I were sitting in an arena at our first WPPI convention...alongside those of us HUGE fans of Jasmine Star. We were among thousands, but somehow she stood out and I whispered to my husband, "I know her!" "Who?!," he asked me. "That girl down there. The gorgeous one with the awesome blunt bangs and short blond hair." He rolled his eyes, most likely thinking I was crazy and more likely hoping I wouldn't make a scene. And yet, I wasn't even sure how I knew her. I started rummaging my brain for how it was possible I couldn't place her. I sat in awe, listening to Jasmine (and other wonderful women photographers) talk about the industry and what they've learned. As the women were talking, though, it suddenly dawned on me. I'm such a Jasmine Star Blog-Stalker that I'd see this girl ON her blog! The realization of it made my neck hot with embarrassment, but I was sure that's where I'd see her. When our class ended, I approached her. And since I'm so awesome at first introductions, (cough), I touched her shoulder and said eloquently, "Hi, um, so this is really weird but..."

I am definitely not smooth, and usually come across as snobby and mean...at least that's what I've been told. Totally heartbreaking to be honest, but Whitney...well, she's a gem. I felt like I'd known her all my life and she wasn't even the least bit offended that I'd recognized her as a result of blog-stalking. Well...at least she was kind enough to convince me she wasn't! =)

Last month, Jason and I traveled to Cali for my BFF's wedding!! The second we landed, we drove to Laguna Beach for a shoot with Whitney! After seeing her in Jasmine's blog, I remember wishing it had been me who'd photographed that epic nautical shoot! I was green with envy and a song my husband has sang one too many times entitled "Jealousy" was ringing in my ears. Her style is everything in person I want my photography to be and I couldn't have been more stoked to see her through my viewfinder and, bonus!, realize she's just as beautiful on the inside. Lucky for me, Whitney is a fabulous photographer herself, so Jason and I got to model in all our pre-baby glory. And I'm hearing only one word at this point: Holllla! Oh, and Amen.

So I have this thing for owls now. I blame my friend Katie, who has an owl obsession! Earlier this year, I'd searched for owl-themed items that would be good thank-you gifts for her. Now I'm constantly seeing them around vintagy stores I go to. Maybe it's that they remind me of her and make me happy, but suddenly I want them all for myself! I'm thinking, then, it's probably no coincidence that this small affair I'm having with owls was suddenly laughable as Whitney had one tattooed on her foot! This...is just awesome. =)

And as for your other tattoo...Whitney, I love Jesus too. =)

Personal: My Best Friend's Wedding

At some point all my personal blogs started to become somewhat of a husband brag book. I don't know when or how it actually happened, but I do have a tremendously awesome husband and with all the man/husband-bashing there is in this world, it's nice to hear/read something about someone who LOVES, actually cherishes their husband. Recently I'd read an amazing blog post on this very subject by a good friend of mine (and amazing photographer!), Whitney Schey. And while she will have you awed by her masterfully written words and brilliantly thought-out blog, I feel the need to share just a simple story of why I think my husband is nothing short of a gift: The best man on the planet for me and the greatest man I've ever known. Here goes:

So my best friend just got married! It was the honestly the most exciting thing ever and I'd been looking forward to it since November 28^th, which, yes I care a lot, is when she got engaged! I couldn't wait to see her in a white dress, with flowers, and all gorgeous. It was just a dream for me to watch my best friend commit herself to another in love. I am a total sucker for weddings, but marriage has been the single greatest event in my life thus far. But I digress... When she told me Garrett had proposed, she wrote me a note: I really want you to be there for me when we get married next summer, so don't plan any vacas or go and get prego. Yea, well let's just say I didn't really think that would happen...but it did. IT DID!

So fast forward to her wedding. I'm 7 mos pregnant and suddenly realizing two very serious facts. 1, I was well into my third trimester and was dreading sticking out (literally) in her pictures. Or falling (physically) down the aisle in my 4” gold heels. And 2, as I was actually IN her wedding, I knew there was no way I'd be capable of snapping pictures. The latter was starting to depress me. If you know anything about me, you know that I have a slight problem NOT photographing life's big events. Make it fashionable, grogeous, or a wedding, and I'm in deep. I was trying to get a grip settling for random iPhone shots, when my husband offered to try and take pictures that captured the day for me so I didn't feel like I was missing out. Say what?! As awesome as this was, I wasn't sure if I could show him all that he needed to know in order to actually get the shots. I mean, this is no point-n-shoot, so there is a slight, er, large, learning curve to shooting entirely in manual. At Sunset. On the Beach. At the aperture I wanted. =) Yet, just the idea that he would lug around my bag(s), and keep my camera in hand at all times so I could later see Kim's day unfold made me swoon. It's probably the most selfless thing he's ever done. And while this may seem slightly silly, it was a huge deal to me.

After a fabulously long day at the wedding, at 2am back at our hotel room, J helped me put up my swollen feet in bed while I looked at the pictures he'd taken. I couldn't help but tear up at the sight of what he'd been able to capture! While I'd stayed behind and slowly waddled my way to the reception after the ceremony, Jason had followed Kim and Garrett at a distance and taken pictures of the two of them walking the beach, taking pictures, and having their wedding video filmed. It was like being given a small window into a day that I had been feeling like I'd miss. And how he was able to get so many in focus with manageable exposures made us both laugh. Between the totally black and totally white shots, the best ones were in-between. My husband cared enough to try and do what he knew I had dreaded missing. For that alone, he is the single greatest person on the planet.

Kimberly, your wedding helped remind me that I am blessed beyond measure! It makes me giddy like a child to see you in the same boat! I am so happy that you have found your soul-mate, your partner in life, and your one and only love. You will have the most amazing life and I feel so honored to have been even a small part of it! I love you Kimmy!!

Styled Wedding Shoot: A Vintage Affair

I am super excited and honored that Mile High Bride published a recent styled shoot I photographed earlier this summer!! (Thank you Holly!) With the help of a few close friends, we pulled together a small team of experts who blew me away...I think I shot until the sun went down!

I really want to thank everyone involved for their patience as I sorted, edited, and submitted the images...because, well, being pregnant has upped any normal challenges of tackling my "To Do" list. =) Either way, it was worth the wait, even for me, to see them all finished.

P.S. I must point out that while I used a few professional models for this shoot, really I just have gorgeous friends. =)

The bridesmaids dresses were purchased at Nordstrom Rack believe it or not...but gray is totally my color!!

I knew as early as the 3rd grade. It was as clear as the blue sky. And although I have no idea how I knew, I knew. I felt it. And talked about it day in and day out. After keeping a picture of you folded inside the springs of my grad-school desk, practicing my name with yours in all my notebooks, and dialing your number for years only to hang up because of nerves, most people started to figure it out: I had a serious crush on you. One that wouldn't go away and one that I prayed nightly never would.

It took me years to turn your head...and while I'm not sure how I did it or what I did, I'm glad you looked. We have a history that is rare and a love that is rarer. I have no idea how I ended up so blessed, or how it's possibly that you still make me turn all shades of red when you walk into a room. But you do. You just always do.

Jason, you are my life. My Love. My everything-cheesy-in-a-love-song kinda man. I had no idea that at our 8 year anniversary, I'd be 8 months pregnant. This is SO SURREAL!! =) It's a new chapter that somewhat frightens me, if I'm being honest, but there is no one I'd rather walk this with than you. Thank you for making my life better than those years of dreaming what life would be like with you. Thank you for loving me more than I deserve.

Over the weekend, my husband and I were fortunate enough to attend my BFF's wedding in California. As I'm well into my 7th month of pregnancy, this was interesting to say the least! But night after night with her wonderful family, we found ourselves eagerly anticipating the start of our own. Truly there can be nothing better than the love and friendship you have with your family...and for me, the more the merrier!

Which brings me to my next point: my cousin, MyLeah. I have known her since birth, but I see her only once a year. I remember when she was born, her and her sister, and how very excited I was to have girls in the family! Little did I realize then how heartbreaking it would be to have girl cousins who lived in TX when we lived in CO. I loved my brothers no doubt, but I couldn't paint their nails or curl their hair! Well I could, but they might have been upset. =) MyLeah was my refuge. Even at the age when most teens are "too cool for school" I was thrilled to be able to see my cousins when they came to town, riding in the car with a smile plastered to my face, red nail-polish in hand. I have always wanted a sister, but since that's really out of the question, I'll embrace the sister-cousin's I have...and keep my fingers crossed for a daughter someday in the future.

My prayer for you, MyLeah, is that your spirit soars and your dreams take you to the corner of your smile! Cherish those whom you call family and know how much you are loved. Thanks for always coming to visit me and for being the little sister I never had. Hugs and Love, Shanny.

Bridals: Holly Anderson

My entire idea behind doing "Bridals" is to shoot brides-to-be alone and without their lucky groom: to showcase who they really are in their own style, which, for me, is always perfection since it's so honest. I've been fortunate enough to have these types of brides in the past AND to have such amazing girls wanting to shoot their personal styles. Here's just another sampling of what a Bridal shoot might look like in it's rawest form...

It's not often I meet someone who's so genuinely kind that I try super hard and aim to please. It makes it harder when she's named Holly too. I have a hard time imagining her angry or upset because her name is just so cheerful. She's sweet as honey. But this little bee is fierce! She's definitely a force to be reckoned with in her own modeling career. She's graced the cover of Denver's best fashion magazine, 303, not once, but FIVE times. As intimidating as she may seem, my wish is that her super-gorgeous-smile inspires all of my "non model" brides to just put on their best boots and grin. You gotta admit, Holly's boots are pretty awesome.

Personal: Betty's Cake. Not Mine.

I knew I never liked her. Even when I was little...well except at that point I thought I could grow to like her, but the truth is, I grew up with a lot of amazing chefs in my family. No one was going to make a better cinnamon roll than my Grandma Crabbs or a better Boysenberry pie than my Grandma Krause. My mom could make the best, just best, desserts, ice-cream, and pumpkin pie, and my father was always a wiz with anything for breakfast. My problem wasn't with their home-made-totally-from-scratch-cooking. The problem was Betty. Betty Crocker. She claimed to make things all easy peasy. Still does actually and it's supposed to be getting easier and easier. There's so much crud floating around in that box that all you do is mix and bake now. Viola!!

It tastes like homemade! Blah. It does not. Last night, I started baking for our 4th of July BBQ...and after my second attempt at her Angel-Food-Cake-in-a-box (p.s. don't tell Grandma because she'd honestly disown me) I have realized that me and Betty can't be friends. I was tempted to breath into a paper bag when my cake overflowed all over my oven, but I gave up when I couldn't find one. Burning sugar and modified corn starch waifed through my house. I thought I could at least save what looked like the rest of the cake by cooling it. I huge it up-side down in true Master Chef style. Seconds later, the whole cake slid down the bottle of Riesling and out of the pan. A sticky mess of batter laid there steaming as much as I was. *scream*

As hard as cooking with scratch can be, it's been so much more reliable. And even though Betty says "Simply Add Water," written in her best cursive on the front of the box, I'm apparently the fool who will mess that up!

Sorry Betty. I really tried to like you, but you can hardly call this an Angel Food CAKE.

Personal: A Belly.

So I've had a ton of people asking to see pictures of my belly. I think it's so funny how much all of us really want to peer into someone else's life. I mean, I'm the same way...or else I wouldn't check facebook 9 times a day or drool over wedding blogs. But alas, here it is. I wonder if it'll be worth all the fuss. =) The picture on the left suddenly seems like a lifetime ago. Was I really that small at 11weeks?

Let me just say I'm happy, healthy, still working like a dog, and so proud that so far...so good!

Styled Shoot: Hannah's Bridals

So here's the thing about bridal shoots...styled bridal shoots included. The shoot is geared towards you, the bride! It's a session JUST about you and we'll showcase how you're glowing from head to toe all in love. Most of these sessions occur before the actual ceremony so we get a chance to meet and hang out, but they're also a way for you to preview what your wedding photos will look like in my style, while getting a chance to be a glamorized model for a day. I love all things wedding, but I'm addicted to all things fashion. So when I get to combine the two...well...fireworks!

Case in point: Hannah is gorgeous. She makes my camera smile. It just clicks with glee and won't quit when they're together. Or maybe that's me. I just can't seem to stop pressing the shutter. =)

I wrote this blog post 4 weeks ago. I was thinking I'd announce our new life this way...then changed my mind and decided to wait until we had more details! All things considered, I thought I'd still share what I was thinking at that point. Life has taken some crazy turns lately, but I think I've had it pretty easy. All things considered. Without going into much detail, I have been treated as "high-risk" since day one. I was born with an anomaly that I was unaware of until this news...but God has been good and He has continued to bless us and keep me, and this baby (A BOY!), healthy! =) For those of your who have been curious about this process...here's the blog I left unpublished for so long.

I have an announcement to make. It's hard to believe...STILL, but it might help some of you make sense of my lack of posts, my timing, or randomness of edits. =) I want to preface this by saying this has been/is one of the craziest, most fun, most scary times of my life. I am happy beyond words! And also timidly trying to find my way.

I suppose the easiest way is to just come out and say it...but then again maybe it's better to just share a letter I wrote instead. Sometimes letters are just better. =)

Personal: Slowly, but surely!

I don't think I realized, at least on a literal level, how much time being pregnant takes up. (Have I announced that on here?!) Jason and I had a date tonight at a movie and a had to leave twice to go to the restroom. And I get home from nursery sales in the heat all day and suddenly I'm beat...in all ways possible. This might not be a good thing considering I still have a ways to go. Although, it's no small feat that I'm a little over half-way there! Success!!

Anyway, part of being slightly out of it has made me slow on pictures. But I have some amazing shots to post and a huge wedding collaborative shoot on Tuesday! Here's to tons of gorgeous pictures gracing my web-pages in the near future!

Engagement Shoot: Jen and Michael

We finally met again at a local Starbucks. I was happy to finally see Jen again after all these years. Her brother had married a great college friend of mine from Cali, and Katie was nice enough to refer Jen to me. There's nothing better than a friend's confident referral. Seriously, what is there? =)

Jen and I had the same goal that day: Met up for a quick wedding run-down, have a beverage or two, and beat the odds of rain we'd been having for 2 weeks straight! But this is Colorado! Who drinks a hot-chocolate in mid-May and wears a sweatshirt for a photoshoot outside? That'd be me. Jen and Michael were so much cooler. Their drinks were so much more fancy and they seemed like old friends...the kind that met at church when they were younger, only to wind up getting married later in life. I suppose it helps that that really is their history. =)

The three of us spent the day walking Denver University's campus. We entirely missed the rain, which started almost as promptly as we'd finished. Both Jen and Michael were so real...two down-to-earth love birds who had no issues being in front of my lens...shooting them was just as relaxing as the hot-chocolate I'd had earlier. That, and it was just as sweet.

Jen is so cool that she has her own brick at DU! I'm super jealous.

I can't wait for your wedding Jen and Michael! And as evidence with all that kissing, your life is going to be so amazingly full of love! I'm so glad I know you.

I think all brides are beautiful! I really do. Any woman in love ready to commit herself in marriage is beautiful. Giddily smiling and glowing all day! But sometimes, brides can also be as fluid in front of the camera as a crystal-clear river. When Courtney gets married, she will be that kind of bride: Gorgeous and down-right fearless in front of the camera. A "model" bride. And a fashion, gone wedding, photographer's dream! Lucky for me she's one of my best friends. =)

Reflections for Mother's Day

When you taught me at the age of 5 to curl my own hair, you were a gold star in my book.

Even though I wasn't allowed to wear heels until the 7th grade, I'll never forget wearing yours and practicing the sounds they made on the garage floor. I was going to be SO cool. Once we wore matching overalls. With matching Keds.

I have always wished I had your thick hair. And your olive skin-color.

Your 4th-of-July-strawberry-blueberry-cake, was the best dessert you ever made. But even the nights we ate cheesy mashed potatoes over cooked hot-dogs, I thought you were a great chef.

Oh...and even when you said not to, I still stole cookie-dough out of the bowl when you weren't looking. It was the very best thing on earth.

I remember asking you once why you put on mascara on the weekends if you weren't going out. You answered that impressing even just your family was important, but it also made you feel beautiful. I've always applied mascara in the mornings. Even if I'm only cleaning house.

I've long wondered if you were the only mother on the planet who intentionally played a movie over and over again that did nothing but make you cry. Or play Somewhere in Time's soundtrack only to result in the same amount of tears? I suppose it's possible I'll be this same person, but since I've watched you so many time, I'm not sure I have to play the movie anymore to get the waterworks going.

I think our taste in music spanned quite a few generations. There was years for us of nothing but 50s. Then years of only classic rock and that awful late-night-lady, Mary Marlow. Country music followed for a decade or so and we would blow up the car speakers with Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's Fishing in the Dark or Dixie Chicks' Wide Open Spaces. Slowly, but surely, pop and alternative music filled the car.

I wonder what you thought about during all those drives to Greeley when you spent a few years getting your Master's degree. I can't imagine it was easy leaving us a few nights a week to do it, but it was an honorable thing you did and you've always been so smart!! I feel like I should thank you for teaching me most of what I know. Not just as a mother, but as my first actually teacher in school. And for writing me long letters late at night when I was in college. I have saved every last one. I wonder if you know that.

I'm happy that you waited to tell me about Santa-Claus until I was 10. Those years were some of the best in my life.

I have always appreciated how accepting you've been of my decisions. Especially the fun ones like marrying Jason. You welcomed him into our family the moment you knew how important he was to me. Even when, for me, that moment of clarity was as a child.

I thought it was funny growing up that your favorite color was yellow. But as I've grown older, I find it a very fitting color. You are bright like the sun and yellow makes me smile. Always. But I still cry when I hear Debbie Gibson's Lost in your Eyes. In fact, just writing the song title gets my keyboard wet!

I'm not sure I'll ever understand what it takes to be a mom...a great mom. But I've been fortunate enough to be blessed with an amazingly great one. You are so smart, so funny, and absolutely beautiful. You're quiet the majority of the time, but when you laugh, it echoes across the country. I don't think little girls ever outgrown needing their mothers. And unlike most people, I won't be upset if I turn out just like you! You give me much to aspire to!

Bridal Shoot: Non-Traditional Vintage, Spring, & Fashion

With my tree nursery being so busy this time of year, I feel like I've been totally slacking in the photo department...especially since I'm entirely type A, so I'm all over everything. I'm a multi-tasker, a stay-up-late-get-it-done kind of girl, and an erratically organized person. But that might have to change. Wait, nah, it's good. Haha. I have the most amazing life and this is one of my most favorite times of year! I smelt cut-grass yesterday on my drive home. I totally swooned. F'real.

I digress. I really just want to post some images I took last week of one of my favorite models, Courtney Roxanne. You'll notice every model I have is my favorite. It's totally true and I'm such a blessed photographer to work with such talented and FUN people. C and I did a non-traditional bridal shoot with a vintage twist for our first set. And we added a few bunnies so it really felt like spring. =) I have to say that I absolutely love collaborative shoots where there are tons of people involved, but for this set, it was just Courtney and I. And for me, it was magic.

But without further ado...our first set. Enjoy!

Many thanks to my mother-in-law, Amy, who provided the beautiful antique house for our backdrop. I was in love!! And to my grandfather, Roger, who allowed me to use a few of his bunnies. He's been raising and showing rabbits since I was a child, but this time, they provided me inspiration I hadn't thought of when I was a small 5-year-old. Love you guys! xo

Aiming for Gratitude. With Mrs. Furrow.

Today I became that customer. I so didn't mean to and it wasn't that bad, but it got me some nasty looks from the lady behind me. I just can't understand why everyone is in such a hurry anymore!! The other day, my husband, Jason, and I were talking about how people seem to be acting like they're on fire or something. Honestly I just can't figure out why everyone's life is on cheetah-mode!

But back to the story...I'm at the grocery store. I bought a small cart-full and started through the line. The small lady bagging asks me, "Would you like paper or plastic?" Then it hits me. I can't answer that. I'm in Boulder!! Boulder people expect you to have earth-saving, tree-hugging, re-usable bags! And what's worse? I'm wearing my tree-nursery shirt that says "I LOVE TREES" on the back. No joke! I was paralyzed for a second. What to do?? Think Shanny! But I'm quick. Not with math, but pretty much everything else. (Well while we're on it, I'm not really a fast runner either, but yea, I'm quick with everything else). So I suddenly remember: I purchased some uber trendy re-usable shopping bags with yellow owls on them at Forever21 a few weeks ago. I could totally use those!!! But they were somewhere in my trunk. I asked the bagging lady if it was okay to run out to my car to get them. "Sure," she said, "that should be fine, we're not that busy." So I went. Ran outside. Dug through my trunk and bags of nursery stuff and found them. All 4 cute bags with Mr. Hoots on them.

When I reach my check-out lane again, somehow there are people in my lane waiting and people in the other lanes surrounding me. What are the chances of it just getting busy in the last 2 minutes? So at this point, I'm starting to feel bad. The checking-out is done, but now we have to bag everything. The lady behind me (whom I might add was wearing a burlap skirt and patterned Birkenstocks), was super grumpy-looking with her arms crossed and a furrow at her brow. She looked as though I'd done the Mexican hat dance all over her bridal wreath. But how, I thought, I just ran to get my bags so I'm earth-friendly! Isn't that what you people want?!! At this point I'm fretting (and thinking mean thoughts) trying to help bag my things so she can check out too, when the cashier asks me, "M'am, do you have a discount-card with us?" Even though she said M'am, I answered her. "Um, yes I do." I hand her my card. Then my credit card...but wait!! I suddenly remember I have a $12 off coupon and I honestly did my shopping today JUST so I could use it! Oh man, pulling the coupon out of my wallet felt like it took an eternity. I swear the whole world swayed in slow-motion because of the glare Mrs. Furrow was giving behind me. I smiled politely, but felt my face blush as I saw her count the 2 minutes that had passed since I'd returned from my car with the hoot-bags. Two minutes that were obviously the most precious minutes of her furrowed life.

The cashier rings the coupon. Then rings it in again. "Strange," she says. "It's saying you didn't purchase the minimum order to received the $12 off, but you're only $.34 away." Feeling the pressure of Mrs. Furrow's time-constraint now, I blurt out, "I'll just buy some gum then. Any flavor...that will do it!" I smile again. And my face starts turning a new shade of pink. The cashier rings in the gum. Then the coupon. Then the coupon again. Oh man, please let this go faster, I think. This lady is about to pull out her laser eyes!! The cashier calls the manager to over-ride the faulty coupon and it's then that I realize I'm that customer. I'm the slow one. The one who has a problem, or two, in the check-out lane that holds everyone up. I apologize to Mrs. Furrow in my mind, but try to quickly gather my things so she knows I'm remorseful for holding her up. I really am!! The manager scans the coupon and I illegibly scribble a signature and leave the pen swinging on the bungee...after all, it would have taken another .9 seconds to put the pen back. As I pull the cart out, the cashier asks if the discount card on the counter was mine. I realize it is and with one last look, I smile politely at Mrs. Furrow. She rolls hers eyes. I'm suddenly tempted to stick out my tongue, but instead I just scoop up my card and head out.

In the parking-lot I load my trunk to the brim, and then begin my journey home. There is construction on the road that holds up traffic. Then I'm following cars driving at the pace of a snail. And I hit all the red lights. Coasting into my driveway forever-and-a-day later, I think to myself, please don't let me have laser eyes and a furrow, God. I will try to live each moment in gratitude. I am careful to enunciate this word: TRY.

a Coastal morning makes me think of Cali...

This morning was coastal. I have a friend, actually a photography-partner-in-crime, who uses that term all the time. But it really was "coastal" this morning. Somehow after a beautifully sunny-day yesterday shooting, I woke up to snow on the ground. So that's not so much what you see on a beach, but within a few hours, the snow melted, the air thickened and a beautiful fog of perfectly gray photography light lit up my home-town. These mornings are awesome. But they're rare. There is such a peaceful quiet in these dimly-lit mornings and it seemed so fitting to my mood this morning. Especially this Easter weekend. God is good. In SO many ways...

A cloud-covered Saturday made me think of Cali...my best friend, her up-coming wedding, and all the things this year is going to bring. Especially once Colorado's weather straightens out and gets Sunny 24/7. It's coming for sure. And it's exiting!

And so is a photoshoot on the harbor in Newport Beach! Here are some images from my visit there a few weeks ago with one of my most favorite models, Tiana. This girl rocks my world. She's absolutely stunning and a joy to be around. Who wouldn't want to spend a sunny day on a dock with T and her cowboy boots? Yes please. =)

Bridal Shower: My BFF in the CA sun.

Last weekend I was fortunate enough to attend my best friend's Bridal Shower! I say fortunate because she lives in CA...I live in CO. I was SUPER excited for some warm weather and the sound of the ocean. Plus a fashion shoot at the harbor was in order. (More on that later) Too much fun!

My bff, Kimberly Cook, is gorgeous and I couldn't be happier for her and her amazing fiancé, Garrett! Here are some images from our cozy weekend in San Clemente.

Baby Shoot: Baby Cook"i"e is 3 months old!

If I had to write a resume right now, I for sure wouldn't put down "accomplished child photographer." I have been fortunate enough to capture a few beautiful babies and children along the way, but I must say that it's a style of photography that doesn't seem to come easy. I have long been inspired by those photographer's who seem to photograph babies and children flawlessly. Including Jose Villa, Carrie, and Rachel Williams. Cleverly coming up with the most breathtaking images full of soft tones, hard-to-capture smiles, and uniquely styled scenes. I've realized, however, that with every shoot I do, I grow. I imagine myself somewhat like a tulip. I'm just hoping that I grow in the right direction. I've aimed for the sky...although I have a LONG way to go. ;)

I tried stretching my petals towards the sun again with a Natosha's baby boy. Beautiful Collin was full of smiles a few weeks ago. And while he's made me look good at times because he's flawless, I am realizing that this child-photography-creativity is a process. One that just takes a bit more love, time, and sun. Slowly, but surely, I hope to bloom entirely. But this cutie-pie certainly brightened my day! *Wrinkled Nose*

And I must say, capturing the exact smile of Cookie Monster on this little "Cook"ie's face was the highlight of my day. I honestly can't believe his smile is so much like his blue-buddy! It's uncanny.

New Website = The Smile Zone

I feel as though there needs to be a drum-roll. Not because I think this is the best wedding website you've ever seen, because believe me, it's not...but because it was built with a lot of blood, er, well no blood, but sweat, and tears for sure! But there was also a ton of smiles and laughter, so all in all this process was a blast! =) I'm sure there are mistakes and I'm sure I'll change a few things in the next few weeks, but it's a start. And it's finally up!! So at this point, I'll be sitting in the all smiles and laughter zone.

I must say thank you to my amazing husband who built the entire site based on just my ideas...and who also changed it at least 8 times because I couldn't make up my mind. Jason, I love you!! And just because it's my blog and I'm allowed to be sappy--Jason's honestly the brightest spot in my life. Coming home to him is like waking up to sun-kisses in the morning. To me, there is nothing better!

I so stoked to start this process. And I'm running. With my arms wide open. And my eyes too. So I can actually see where I'm going! =)

That Blah Feeling...and some Saints.

Very rarely am I at a loss for words. But over the last week, that's been me. I think there is something blowing through our house and it is SO unwelcome. It's taken for form of an eye twitch for my husband and laziness for me. I'm definitely not one to be lazy. In fact I hate the word. But I've been unmotivated, tired, listless, and down. To be honest, we both know where this is coming from. It's two separate sources, but the goal is to beat this down! The phrase I'm tired of being tired rings all too familiar for me these days...and it's definitely a strange place for me. It's just not something I'm used to. I hate that Blah feeling! Since writing seems to help, I apologize for sharing this with the world. But I'm already feeling better! Ha.

In other, less boring news, I wanted to share some images of a store Jason and I stumbled upon in Las Vegas a few weeks ago. It was called All Saints and I'm sure many of you have been there, or shop there regularly, but for sheltered-high-scale-fashion-store peeps like me in Colorado, this was awesome. The sewing machines were the first thing that pulled me in...some 1800 machines just in the windows! But the styling and layout of the store was serious eye-candy for me! If a clothing store can literally paint an image of what I want my photography to become, then this is it. Everything about it was perfect.

And yes, that's an i-Pad you can use to access their catalogs. They were all over.

And my awesome hubby! ...eye-twitch and all. =)

I had no idea what it was going to be like, but I did expect to learn something. I just didn't expect to learn *this* much! WPPI was an amazing experience as as I said before, I'm overwhelmed with ideas and inspiration. Between Jasmine, Jose, Jill LaFleur, the Women in Contemporary Photography, and Photographer's Ignite, I'm spent. We had other classes too, but these 5 were the TOPS. Highlights for sure!

I should start off by apologizing for the abnormally long post. If I lose you here, no worries. I just don't want to forget this last week! I'm getting into the nitty gritty...the long way. =)

Opening night we went to a fashion show with Nigel Barker. Pretty awesome seeing him just right there. At one point he asked for volunteers to model for him on stage...and unless I started punching people out, I knew I wasn't going to get it. Alas, though. How sick would it have been to have said that I was shot by Nigel Barker?! Um, so insane I'd probably pass out. Or blubber like an idiot and literally not remember my name...oh wait, I did that with Jasmine Star too! Ugh. ;)

And beautiful Jill LaFleur's classroom!! This woman is amazing. Such an inspiration and for sure it was more pleasant listening with all the stunning decor she filled the room with.

And no stone was left unturned. Even her business card and info was stunningly wrapped for us! Jill, you rock! Swoon. =)

One class I didn't photograph, but was entirely worth the trip to Vegas was the Women in Contemporary Photography speech. Nine wonderful women who run super successful photography businesses spoke about their approach, their beliefs, and their advice. The arena was full of women, but luckily we landed a spot 2 seats over from Jasmine's husband, JD, so Jason knew he wasn't the only guy there. =) Kidding. But there were a lot of women...and the girls flocked to JD just as much as Jasmine. At one point, Jason looked at me and said, I honestly don't know how they deal with that! Props to you guys honestly...because at conventions like this, you've for sure reached celebrity status!! But back to the class. The women were amazing!

--Catherine Hall spoke about gaining confidence in your value as a photographer. Believing that you're worth what you charge. Because regardless of what the numbers are, you are worth what you ultimately believe you are! Uh, note to self.

--Jasmine talked about outsourcing the 2 things you're the weakest at doing. So if you can't design albums well, or some aspect of your business seems to be the bane of your existence, then outsource it. She also mentioned how severely important she thinks your online storefront is. And how blogging has made her who she is. People see her in everything she does. She has a thumb-print on literally e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g, so her brand is now desired by a ton of brides. Even non-brides. And yet, she says people are attracted to people who are like themselves. Thus when someone doesn't like your style, awesome. Because it gets you closer to narrowing down YOUR brand. Noting...

--Lindsey Adler was a surprise because she shoots fashion. LOVE. Her approach was super similar to the others, but since she's so business savvy in the fashion world, it was like listening to a lightning storm because she just radiated power. Noted.

The other women were absolutely fabulous as well--Joy and Jules Bianchi, Jessica Claire, Kay Eskridge, Dawn Shields, and Sarah Petty--so check out their work. Women's work. Yaya.

As WPPI came to an end, there was another highlight, besides what I've just raved about. This last class, or show rather, called Photographer's Ignite sent us home with a bang. Basically 18 photographers get just 5 minutes to speak and share their wisdom with us. This made for the most entertaining morning. It was just plain fun for sure!! I had not expected to literally wipe tears from my eyes from laughter, but Kirsten Lewis gave me no choice. And Jasmine decides to get up their and give her words of wisdom in an acapella rap! Inspirationwhelmed

Today is Saturday and after a super long journey home, I am feeling overwhelmed with inspiration. OVERwhelmed. Inspirationwhelmed. I learned so much at WPPI and I'm not sure where to start in the sharing of what an experience this was for me.

So let's start with the easiest thing to talk about...I was fortunate enough to actually MEET both Jasmine Star and Jose Villa. I've been following Jasmine for the last 3 years and to get a chance to just thank her in person was beyond exciting for me. When I walked away, my body was shaking with adrenaline and I know she has no idea what she's done for me, but she has made me better in every way possible. And I honestly love her for it. As for Jose, I only recently started following him after seeing his work in a magazine...and I just can't get enough of him! I looked at his images so often that I recognized them in an album at the trade show. There was no watermark or logo, but I was SURE they were his. At the back of the album, they credited Jose Villa for the images. It was then that I knew why I'm so taken aback by these two. They poses a quality of image that is so real, so consistent, and so beautiful, that I instantly know who shot what! My crowning achievement in life will be just this. I have a long way to go, but geez the inspiration and excitement is bursting from me. Like confetti. And I honestly have no other way to describe it!

After an emotion-packed few days, my husband, Jason, and I took class after class to absorb the best of the wedding photography industry, which is filled with some of the most genuine people on the planet. I met photographers there, however, who thought I'd been shooting weddings for years. I passed out my cards and then thought...I wonder if they'll even like me because I have so far to go... It's been a challenge for me to not continually compare myself to others, but my journey is unique and we all have to start somewhere. On our own time. I honestly love my fashion and won't ever give it up, but I am eager to dive into this industry and shoot real-life love on a regular basis.

I have a few more changes to make to my new wedding-website before releasing it, but then it's go-time. I'm all in. And even though I'm starting in the back of this race, humble and meagerly trying to find my way, I will. At least I'm praying I will. There is so much talent out there and I struggle with thoughts of worthiness. But I'm still shooting, still dreaming, and still in it.

WPPI - Eeeeeeeeeeek!!

I don't know who's more excited...me or the dogs?!! Tomorrow morning my husband and I leave for WPPI! Viva Las Vegas! I have wanted to go for years. Finally it's here. And I'm totally pumped. I signed up for tons of classes and hope that I have enough time to actually see everything/one on my list. Of course, I'm also stalking Jasmine Star, so hopefully I'll get a peek of her too...in-between all the classes I'm taking. I honestly can't wait! Eeeeeeeeeek.

But my dogs are freaking out too. See, whenever Jason and I leave, my dad takes care of the pups. (Thanks Dad!!) To keep them occupied, we give them a new toy that they can destroy. It makes for a messy house, but it also makes for a two of the happiest dogs! I gave them their new tigers just before heading to my dads for their stay. Both looked at me with eyes screaming "Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!" =)

Our Ordinary Valentine's

I have a tiny family of 4: A husband, 2 dogs...and me. They are the love of my life and I don't think anything compares to the awesomeness of their personalities and our day to day routine. I am learning to love my life in the ordinary. Yesterday's sermon was about remembering to thank God in the ordinary. It's easy to call on Him in times of sorrow and pain, but what about all those times during the day when life is entirely ordinary? Thank you God, for my life as of now...plain and simple. Laundry in progress, dishes in the sink, flowers on the table, photos waiting for edits, a dog at my feet, a dog barking at the door, and the greatest man ever to have spent the last 10 Valentine's Day with.

Our ordinary life is perfect. And our ordinary Monday night--workout, make dinner, play with the dogs, and watch 90210--will be the best extra-ordinary Valentine's!

Personal: The cupid-gram

A few days ago, my sister-in-law asked me what Jason and I did for our first Valentine's Day. For someone who seems to remember everything, literally so many details it's obnoxious, I actually wasn't sure I could remember. I tried thinking hard, squinting my eyes towards the bright sunlight...as if using the trick to correct my astigmatism might help me correct a memory lapse. I can't really remember, I'd told her. But I'll think hard on it...maybe the answer is in one of my old diaries, I suggested.

After a few hours of trying to remember which one was our first one--To the diaries I went. And back down memory lane for longer than I'd wanted to be there. Within the pages of my high school diary there was more heartbreak and anxiety than I'm proud to admit. Sure there were happy times, but I found the pages riddled with phrases like why doesn't he like me, maybe he'll notice me today, I'm so heartbroken I can't eat, hopefully by the next entry we'll be dating, and maybe I won't ever truly understand love until I'm married. As for the Valentine's Days, most were fairly bland and some were down-right sad. When I was a freshman, I'd fallen hard for this guy in the 10th grade. When Valentine's Day came, our high school gave out cupid-grams...a red rose and a song from our choir were delivered to all the lucky girls. For most of the girls who didn't receive one, we'd brush it off like it was no big deal--a dumb thing anyway. But to me, it was the world! I would lay in bed the night before thinking about how it would happen. How this guy, was going to send me one in Biology, no 2! cupid-grams. I would be the talk of the school, I'd thought. But things don't always work out the way you dream. I didn't receive one from him, but instead, he'd given his red rose and song to one of the prettiest girls in the school. As for me, he later taped a blush-colored carnation to my locker as a peace offering. A carnation?! I have since hated that flower.

Since, as it seems, Valentine's Days never really amounted to anything, I started realizing that I've suppressed most of my memories of this yearly holiday. After spending hours re-reading those high-school days, I was glad I'd let them go and failed to remember them. The joy didn't flow through the pages until I'd met Jason and honestly things were so awesome, so happy, that I hardly ever wrote. I was so busy living life with him that I'd let years fly by in my diary--empty page after empty page. But somehow, as odd as this sounds, staring at those blank pages jogged the memory of our first Valentine's Day. As neurons fired rapidly, I smiled as I remembered it:

I'd been at school all day...watching the girls in my class get cupid-gram after cupid-gram...and rose after rose. I was a senior that year and Jason was a freshman at CU, so clearly I should have been over the whole rose/song thing, but I wasn't sure I was. Yet, I'd made it through the day in good spirits and was looking forward to our date later that night. As soon as I had walked inside my basement door, I noticed that the floor beneath me was littered in petals. Red rose petals covered our teal carpet in a trail to my room. At the age of 17, this was honestly the coolest thing ever!! On my dresser sat a dozen long-stemmed roses, a teddy bear, and a HUGE box of chocolates in the shape of a heart. There was also a few cards waiting to be read and a note that said "Call Me". I remember picking up the phone thinking, this is SO much better than a cupid-gram!

I found out later that his sweet surprise was hardly an easy feat. He'd asked my parent's permission to sneak into the house during the day and had strategically planned the drive from Boulder to Longmont in-between his own classes, making sure to miss my late-morning departure for school and my early arrival home...nothing was easier than my senior year in high school let me tell you! Ha! But back to the story. Jason had planned a lot of this well, but had forgotten one super important detail. Um, gas! He'd run out on the highway. Of all places! Bad news bears. Not only had he run out, but he couldn't think of anyone who could help him, so he started jogging to the nearest gas station...nearly 3 miles away. I laugh every time he tells me this story because not only did he have to run there, he had to run all the way back, with a shiny-red gallon of gas. Obviously he'd made it before I'd come home, but his effort alone won him the boyfriend-of-the-year award, and those chocolates tasted sweeter as he'd reenacted the scene at dinner.

This cupid-filled day lands once every year and yet while I can't remember them all, there are a few that are unforgettable. There was the one where he'd surprised me in Cali at school with flowers and a visit; or the one when he'd forgotten entirely until the night of so he purchased not one, but fourteen separate bouquets as a make-up; or the one where he surprised me with a cozy dinner that he'd made 100% on his own; or the one where he learned that I honestly do not like traditional V-day gifts--in fact, I loathe the jewelry pendants & candy. And pink is my least favorite color. Props to J for figuring that one out early-on.

Valentine's Day is around the corner again. The 10th one we've celebrated together! Ten. Our life IS love, so a specific day on the calendar seems mundane. But we'll celebrate anyway! Gives us another excuse to stay in together and be happy as pie. Happier than a cupid-gram could have ever made me. ♥

...between amazing and perfect...

You know everyone is going to shoot her after this, she said. I laughed...knew she was right. Natosha, my makeup artist, & I had been working together for awhile so we knew this girl was beyond GOOD! Last March, we caught a beautifully warm day and shot for hours. At least 700 pictures filled my card after only three outfits. But she was ridiculous. Better at modeling than I think she'd acknowledge. Yet it seemed like somehow she knew she was good. Hailey Middleton. I knew I wouldn't soon forget her name. And 'Tosh and I just laughed out loud. Hailey, don't forget us when you're famous. =) Lol.

Hailey makes my shoots something straight out of a fairytale. She connects with the camera--latches on and never lets go. She's somewhere between amazing and perfect, I think. Maybe it's her confidence? Maybe it's in her blood? Or yet maybe it's the adoration and support from her mother who accompanies her on shoots...who sits quietly in a corner, but beams pride Hailey turns to fuel? Nan, is someone I'm super fond of. And we've only met twice.

On a snowy day last week, Hailey showed up looking stunning as ever to help me shoot another bridal-look for my wedding portfolio. I want brides to see how gorgeous you can look! And while I feel a few heads shaking...you don't have to be Hailey or even a model to look this good! You just have to "beam." Laugh out loud like no one is listening and smile, like my friend Cassie says, as if you don't care if anything's in your teeth. =) Basically just show me your "happy." The fact that you're beautiful makes you the perfect model...and you're beautiful because you're YOU. ...and because you're in love.

You'll be the prettiest bride anyone's ever seen. Swear. But if you're still not convinced...let Hailey inspire you. And then summon up the gumption to rock it out--entirely out.

The following is the reason I love photography, but mostly, why I love shooting people. I LOVE fashion...every single aspect of it. Even the ugly-pretty. But people in love? Is there anything that beats that? Throw in a little fashion and suddenly I'm on cloud 9. And 10.

Memorable Blue

Today I'll always remember. The gentle snow that fell all day like confetti, the cold temperatures of 30° feeling warm after -17° days last week, the cozy lunch with Jason at Chipotle for the hundredth time. =) I have so many days like this, but today felt special.

I took the dogs out for a run in the field tonight. Just before sunset, yet again, our trees made a silhouette that was stunning against a snow-lit blue sky. B.l.u.e. ...tranquil, quiet, confident, and loyal. I had to take a picture.

Something about holding a camera makes me feel whole...

P.S. I am super excited to attend WPPI this year and try to "accidentally" run into Jasmine Star! Woot!!!

Wedding: Boulder Bridal Shoot...Part 1

Today has been interesting to say the least. It's dark in my house. Freezing, freezing everywhere, and my husband is still sick. Poor guy...but I just pray I don't get it too. I'm already feeling like I'm in a bit of a funk. I think it's the weather though. Sometimes the human body can't keep up with Colorado weather insanity. It kills me.

However, that being said, it's nothing listening to a little Gregory Alan Isakov can't cure. Or Mike Snow, Bob Marley...Jack Johnson. Lol. Jason asked me today if I only listen to 3 songs on repeat all day. I said no, just the ones that keep me inspired. And for whatever reason, these guys do it for me. Crazy boys. =)

So I sit and listen. Sit and edit. And even though I could hardly contain my excitement last week about my big collab shoot, the process of sorting, editing, and organizing the images I want usually takes longer than I think! Although I did the least amount of editing ever. =) This is mostly due to shooting beautiful models all day and having a team of pros help me put it all together.

Without further ado, since obviously I talk too much, here are the images I shot that I just LOVE from our first set. (I will be posting a follow-up blog that displays all my images from the second set with Cassie!!) Apologies in advance for this being such a long post!

Sickness & thoughts of OZ

Last night, I rolled over to snuggle with Jason. His skin was so hot I quickly pulled away as though I'd been burned. Cuddling was out of the question. Poor guy has had a fever for the last few days and has tried to sleep through both hot and cold sweats. I got up this morning and went to church, leaving him to sleep. I ran errands at a few places, purchased more Theraflu, and then picked up Gumbo from Q-doba. I know when he's feeling better that I'll get the wife-of-the-year award. I didn't get home until 2pm, but there he was still, curled up in bed. It's funny how you can't really remember what it's like to be sick until you are. I feel that I try to sympathize or say I understand, but it's not until I'm sick again myself that I actually feel & remember what it was like. By nature, neither of us are very sympathetic. For whatever reason, we've both grown accustomed to the "suck it up" or "walk it off" way of dealing with things. It's something my father just can't understand. But for whatever reason, we just try to be tough. Even when we aren't.

A year ago today, we were on the other side of the world. This morning, we flew to Ayer's Rock, I wrote in my journal. The only down-side is the flies. They're vicious and in so many numbers you can't count. Even though every single other person in our group bought a fly net for their face, we won't buy one. We just toughed it out...even though the flies are biting. I found this passage funny because I do remember us toughing out the gazillion flies, but I remember simple our time together more. We toured a vast desert that day, made new friends, took endless amounts of pictures, and closed the day sipping Champagne at the base of Ayer's Rock to view its color-change. Sometimes I think we're both so busy acting tough that we forget we're also big saps. We still need each other when we're sick and you'll find both of us with tears in our eyes if we reminisce about life's little moments, or when we hear a harrowing story about an animal. Well not about flies, but just about anything else!

After our Q-doba, I showed him a picture we took a year ago today. The colors on the rock were beautiful and was by far one of the best times of our lives. While I wish that tomorrow we were once again ridding camels to Sunrise, I'll take the morning in bed sipping Chai with J...even if by tomorrow, we still can't really snuggle...

A Model Muse

Sometimes I meet models who are so much more than that. That word, model. So much more than just a person who physically poses for me. They become friends, and people who validate me, inspire me, and are ultimately a muse. I've had this happen more frequently that I think is normal, but it's awesome every single time and I've made some great memories with these mods!!

She is just like that. A model, who's a muse. A friend, and someone who is literally just as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside...wait, is that even possible??? Fallon Jappe is beauty defined.

Shortly after Christmas, she and I got together for another shoot. Add a little makeup from the fabulous makeup artist of mine, (I think that's a claim), Natosha Cooke, and the inspiration is unstoppable.

a turtle and a blanket

Sometimes it blows my mind how fast time flies. I tell myself I will blog every other day...then it's almost a week and life has happened quicker than I could imagine. I don't have a turtle-paced life--although I do have a strange affection for turtles in general...another post maybe. My life's paced like that of a rabbit. Running across the road. While wearing a jet-pack. Being chased by a hyena. Seriously. Ah, but such is life. And it's fun.

Yesterday I had an incredibly fun Bridal-themed photoshoot with some of my most favorite people. I couldn't believe how nervous I was, but sometimes when I get super excited, I start thinking I'll blow it. I doubt my ability to actually take photos. Like, what if I can't find the shutter, or forget how to focus?! My nerves are hard core, but it's something I need to work on. Wanting to hide under a blanket all day isn't much of a life! Get it together! Okay, done.

I have so many images to post, but here's a sneak peak at our amazing, secondary set-up that proves I didn't stay hidden under a blanket...however honestly, when we got to the snow up Flagstaff (in the shade!), and all of us thought our toes had frostbite, and we actually couldn't feel the shutter!, I can't say I didn't kinda think about it again. Not gunna lie.

Our winter scene was set up by the fabulous Cassie Jahn with Cassandra Rose Events. While I simply brainstormed with Cassie about what I wanted, she actually made it happen. xo, C.

Wedding: Hannah & Paul

In December, I had the pleasure of shooting, once again, with a fave. Mark Hayes is an amazing, amazing photographer, but he's also an amazing person. I am so inspired by him and hope that one day, I'll be half as good. If you aren't familiar with his photography, I highly suggest you check it out and click here.

The day was December 18th, and I had the pleasure of shooting the most beautiful wedding. Hannah and Paul Oliver chose amazing venues and all-around beautiful decor. Their attention to detail in everything they did blew me away.

Trinity Methodist Church held the ceremony and The Brown Palace hosted their reception. Their wedding was beautiful! And the perfect start to the Holiday season.

Walking in & out with the two best men in her life...

I can't exactly explain what makes me love these next few images so much, but it's probably because my view through balcony rails framed it perfectly. As perfectly as my mind saw it. Because Mark held the grounds of the church, I was positioned high above the guests, to shoot down, onto the ceremony. During a brief musical interlude, I took a moment to see the wedding in a new light. And I shot creatively, with no rules on exposure or composition. I cherish images like these...because they express better than I can what I was feeling as I shot. And gives viewers a new way to look through my lens. Mmm, Love.

A second favorite! Right after the ceremony, I headed down the cathedral's stairs from the sanctuary so formal pictures could start, but suddenly realized a moment was being shared. Through the staircase railing--click, click. Perfect.

See what I mean about their attention to detail? Beautiful!

It's hard to explain, but something about this image gets me. It's like a secret handshake, or unspoken code of love. It's official. You had your cake and you ate it. Finito.

This is the best part about second-shooting: I get a totally different perspective. And I love it!

All I hear is Gregory Alan Isakov's That Moon Song playing in my head. Megan's eyes have power. And yet it's her presence alone that's powerful. A raw confidence radiates out of her...sitting on a rock in a white blouse and a pair of rain-boots. She Owns.

I love what I do. And for whatever reason, this picture justifies it.

A Quiet Blue

Frigid is colder than freezing. At least I think so. And tonight, it's frigid outside. f.r.i.g.i.d. The frost forms on all our windows. Etching its shapes as a state of claim. Ice latches on outside, clinging to each needle of our trees as if it's always been there. Its molecules diverge: slow down and get their space.

My dogs are quiet. Even when they have to go out. They listen to the frozen air...hear nothing and then look at me. I watch them shift the weight of their little bodies onto different paws; trying to get just an ounce of tepid relief. I only let them out for a quick minute or so. Then it's back to a snuggle-fest of warmth.

I'm happy for the snow. And even the freezing weather. Because sometimes change is nice. Good. A breath of fresh air.

Snow-covered mountains brought a beautifully blue and quiet sunset. I think it's the blue in the sky that makes the night quiet. Not the black so much, but the blue.

It's the dead of winter. But it makes me feel alive.

i've got friends...in high places

He had said he wanted me to shoot it. Yea, me. But I don't do the whole "car" thing very well I told him. But my husband insisted, kept pushing me. Said I could do it. That I was amazing.

I spent a week doubting myself, then knew I'd have to figure it out. Sponsors are waiting, and Jason's always had my back...so I made some calls. Asked for help from some of the best friends I've made this last year. In comes Brett Seeley. If you haven't seen his work, check it out, he's amazing. He finds me a serious studio I can shoot this jeep in. It's massive and I'm stoked!

Then he tells me not one, not two, but a ton of my closest friends will be there too. So I'm in!! All in. Ready to bust it out with the best of them: Friends in low...scratch that!...high places.

Fast forward through a night of crazy-fun-madness. I shot exactly what I wanted. What J wanted me to get. So it's off to submit these bad boys to a magazine. But first, I have to thank some fabulous people. Hugs and love to: Brett Seeley, Junichi Arakawa, Don Hales; my top-notch MUA, Natosha Cooke; a scream-out-loud model, Annelise Jorgenson; and Mike Magree & Lance Joubert who provided an amazing venue for us! And my husband Jason...who makes literally everything fun...and just keeps pushing.

Cold Noses & Joy

This morning was cold...so snowy outside *finally!!* and I snuggled close to J and was thankful. For warmth, for my bed, for someone to snuggle with, and for my tiny family. My God is awesome. Thus is my life!

I peeked across the covers at the dogs in their beds all cozy and thought let's go play in the snow! Even though they were sleeping just a minute ago...both looked at me like I'd just said you get to eat steak tonight! =)

So we bundled up, left J in bed, and went outside. My little pups are always so good at putting things into perspective for me. I watched them play outside for as long as their paws allowed and the little noses could handle.

On the last calendar day of the year, these dogs have given me joy. I wish everyone nothing short of the same...

May you discover new adventures you never thought possible:

May you stare fear in the eye and take it on!

Tomorrow is Christmas Eve. It's already here. Came too fast for me. Christmas tree sales are over and I'm starting to feel a weight being lifted. It's time for less stress. True family time, and an excellent next few days!

I hope everyone has an amazing holiday and truly soaks up what Sat is all about: a little baby.
